Whiteboard Sparkplug Released

We're super excited to announce the initial release of a peer-to-peer whiteboard sparkplug for Spark. We've been using the tool internally for a while now and have found it be really helpful in communicating various thoughts and ideas that are difficult to do with just words. We're anxious to get people's feedback (good or otherwise) to help drive the direction of the tool and find out what features you want to see. You can read more about it here.

Enjoy!

I was very excited to start using your Whiteboard plugin. I added it to my standalone server (only one client on the same box) and tried out the one-to-one connection. Worked a treat. I then tried the group chat method, this didn't work. DO you need more than one person in the room to use the whiteboard? I would connect up another client, but it's in pieces at the moment.

I'm using Wildfire3.2 (source dist) and tested both on Spark2.0.8 and Spark2.5.0Beta

Hi Lee,

We're excited to hear you like the whitebaod plugin. Currently, the whiteboard only works on a peer-to-peer, one-on-one basis. We know how useful a group feature would be so we are planning to add that ability to a future version of the plugin.

Hope that helps,
Ryan

Great work on the plug-in! I've had several folks asking for something like this. I agree with Lee in that being able to use the whiteboard in a conference room would be nice. Also, I was using a cohort as a guinea pig and found that an eraser would be a nice feature to add. For some reason, multiple whiteboards open when I start the plugin though. Keep up the good work!

Hi ryan, and congratulations for your plugin, it's very helpful. Do you know this is a little bug with your plugin : in your roster, you can't have whiteboard when you right click on the name of your contact, and choose 'whiteboard'. You have too engage chat before, and use whiteboard icon in chat window.
I have one question : is'it possible to add functions to copy/paste forms created by user in whiteboard?
I think that can be usefull. Thanks for your work, on this site and in openfire/spark forum.

I'm sorry, my congratulations are of course for Larry too... I forgot to put his name in the post before...

chigger - It's great to hear you're using the whiteboard. I'll add your vote to adding conferencing support. As for adding an eraser, that's a bit more tricky since the svg spec that the whiteboard is loosely based on doesn't really have the concept of an eraser. However, we might be able to figure something out using multiple layers. =) Also, we'll look into what might be causing the multiple whiteboard problem from occuring.

Anonymous (wroot?) - Thank you for the feedback. I'll look into why the roster whiteboard menu isn't working properly. Which version of Spark are you using? I agree, that a copy and paste feature would be very handy, I'll add that to the feature request list.

Glad you're enjoying it. One issue with group drawing is control of the drawing. Should it be 1) a free for all where anyone can draw anything at anytime or 2) should some take a token ("I've got the chalk now") to draw one at a time. Any thoughts or preferences?

hi ryan:

the whiteboard plugin is great! I love it !

but, there is some points I want to say:
1:the whiteboard window doesn't have "max" and "min" function
2:when I import an image, the spark always disconnect from server.
3:when an image is seleted, the image turns all gray, when it is deseleted,it recovers, I think the select and deselect of windows painter is better:)

and, wish the whiteboard be better:)

Hi sunng,

It's great to hear you like the V2 Whiteboard. To respond to your comments:

1. I've never noticed there weren't any min/max buttons!? I'll look into that.

2. That's strange about the image... what version of Spark/V2 Whiteboard are you using? What server are you using?

3. You're right, we need to improve the way images are shown when they're "selected". Improving this feature is already on our todo list. =)

Thanks for the feedback,
Ryan
